"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” - John 8:32
Richard Clay, known as "Rick" to friends and family, is fifty-nine years old and a small-town southeast Missouri native.
He's a father, a son, and brother five times over. He's a Christian, a veteran U.S. Marine, the son of a Vietnam War hero, and a former prom king.
In 1995, Rick was charged and convicted with murder based largely on testimony of two people who plotted to carry out the crime. Nothing links him to the crime scene - no gun, no DNA evidence, no hair, or viable witnesses.
In the end, a jury found that circumstantial evidence was enough to condemn Rick to death.
He was awarded a new trial in 2002 when an appeals court found evidence of prosecutorial misconduct, but the decision was overruled due in large part to errors by his original court appointed defense team.
On January 10, 2011, just 36 hours before his scheduled execution, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon granted Rick clemency, commuting his sentence from the death penalty to life in prison.
Rick has been imprisoned for nearly three decades for a crime he did not commit.
Prosecuted by an attorney found responsible for wrongful imprisonment of others like him, Rick remains behind bars despite hundreds
of questions and shockingly similar indications that crucial evidence proving his innocence was withheld at his original trial.
We need your help to overturn this wrongful conviction and give Rick the justice he truly deserves.
Please join our efforts and let's bring him home!
